What Is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic Care is a form of alternative medicine that focuses on diagnosis and treatment of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, especially the spine, under the belief that these disorders affect general health via the nervous system. Chiropractic Care uses spinal adjustments to correct these misalignments and restore proper function to the nervous system, helping your body to heal naturally”.

If you have not yet visited a chiropractor like our clinic, you might be missing out! Millions of people around the nation have experienced the wonderful benefits of chiropractic care. And, one of the best things about chiropractic care is that it’s a drug and surgery-free path to healthy healing naturally…how awesome is that?!

Types of Treatments

While much of chiropractic work is spinal manipulation(adjustments), chiropractic care now includes a variety of other treatments that include manual or manipulative therapies, postural and exercise education, ergonomic training, nutritional consultation, and sometimes even ultrasound and laser therapies.

What is a Chiropractic Adjustment?

The most common and sought after type of treatment is chiropractic adjustments! When beginning your first adjustment, it is important to familiarize yourself with common chiropractic care and to know what to expect after an adjustment. A chiropractic adjustment will normally involve; a high velocity arm thrust applied to a vertebra, an audible release of gas (joint cavitation), which in turn releases joint pressure (cavitation), and gives a relieving sensation.

In some cases though, minor discomfort has been noted if the surrounding muscles are in spasm or if the patient tenses up during the chiropractic care session. The objective of this type of chiropractic treatment is to reduce the subluxation (“a slight misalignment of the vertebrae, regarded in chiropractic theory as the cause of many health problems”), increase range of motion, and reduce nerve irritability and improve the patients’ overall function! Some other key information regarding your adjustment are as follows.

Almost immediately after the initial adjustment, most patients notice a difference in their bodies! However, everyone’s body takes to an adjustment quite differently, but the majority of individuals feel less pain and more fluidity throughout their body. Just remember, when you speak with your chiropractor after your adjustments, he/she should inform you that these treatments are a process.

How Many Chiropractic Treatment Sessions Are Needed?

Chiropractic care isn’t about creating fast results; it’s about creating lasting results. Most individuals will require several adjustments or treatments in order to correct or manage pain and any underlying issues. As stated previously, patients must remember that chiropractic care isn’t instant, it’s consistent. It’s important to keep in mind that this type of care and treatment should be looked at as an ongoing process, and that the benefits from this are incredible.

Overview & Facts

Did you know that the majority of people go to chiropractors for chronic migraines and headaches, and a large portion of those patients find relief! In addition, more than 100 million Americans suffer from chronic pain, and while the root cause of the pain can be a variety of things, a substantial proportion of these people experience ongoing lower back or neck pain.

And while some may think their local chiropractor can’t fix these chronic/ongoing issues, they’re quite mistaken. A chiropractor helps to keep the soft tissue surrounding your spinal joints free of restriction and can result in a better range of motion and increased flexibility; this helps to keep pain at bay and reduces your chances of injury. And, while it may not be your first thought to visit a chiropractor when you’re feeling down or ill at ease, many patients report feeling happier after receiving any type of chiropractic care.

When chronic pain is a part of your daily life, not only is it hard to focus but suddenly you are no longer feeling well enough to be social and take part in activities you once loved. Studies have shown that depression occurs at a rate as fast as three to four times higher in those with chronic pain when being compared to their healthier peers.

The cycle of chronic pain and depression can become continuous unless it is broken. Regular chiropractic adjustments have proven to decrease pain, depression and anxiety and allow for a healthier (mentally and physically) existence. Here is how anxiety, depression and chiropractic care go together; when your fist, second, and/or third vertebrae become misaligned they put pressure on your brainstem causing interferences throughout you body. Thus, when the brainstem receives pressure from the vertebrae, its normal production of brain chemicals (serotonin and dopamine) are negatively affected. As a result, the person’s production of serotonin begins to decrease, causing changes in their overall mood and their behavior. Chiropractic care can help with depression and anxiety by addressing these specific stressors that are causing the neurological imbalance.

The biggest difference between other forms of care and chiropractic care, is that chiropractic care goes after both the symptom and the cause. Many chiropractors also recognize that many factors affect your health, including exercise, nutrition, sleep, environment and heredity. Chiropractic focuses on maintaining your health naturally to help your body resist its issues and problems rather than simply treating your signs and symptoms.

Also, your chiropractor will work in partnership with you to ensure that you are reaching your optimal potential in health and wellness. So, by seeing a chiropractor routinely, you can see a difference in your immunity against disease, a decreased usage of pharmaceuticals, a decrease in pain throughout your body, a properly aligned spine, and much more. More and more doctors are coming to the conclusion that for both long and short term issues, chiropractic care may be one of the best options out there for their patients.
