Cupping Therapy

What is cupping?

Cupping is Traditional Chinese Medicine that was developed over 2,000 years ago. Cupping is used to promote blood flow and heal the body. It is most commonly used to relieve pain and stiffness in the body specifically the muscles. Cupping is to enhance circulation, pull toxins out of the body and removes “heat” which helps relives sore muscles. By placing a glass or a plastic cup onto the skin, the therapist creates a vacuum in the cup which draws the skin, muscle, and fascia up into the cup. This vacuum can be created with either a hand suction pump or a burning cotton ball. Cupping is not as painful as it looks, the skin in treated areas usually turn pink, red or even blue. The darker colors such a red and blue can mean poor circulation or high levels of toxins making their way out of the body. The light pink color indicates good blood circulation. Depending on the colors of these marks it will give your Massage Therapist an idea about how often you should have a cupping session, darker the color should be done about once a week until they lighten, lighter the color should be done about once a month. These marks or bruises are made because the skin is well vascularize or rich blood supply, the applied suction has been found to increase circulation through dilating capillaries causing them to rupture. These marks can last anywhere from two days to two weeks.

Precautions and Contraindications

Cupping is very safe and has no side effects other than temporary skin discoloration. There are however a few contraindications. Clients that are taking blood thinner, sunburns or burns I general, open wounds, recent fractures,  no cupping in the abdomen during pregnancy, if clients bruise easy cupping should only be done for a short amount of time.

24 hours after Cupping

After your cupping session you might feel like you just got a deep tissue massage. Even though your muscles will feel relaxed and tension is relieved, you might be sore within, you also might feel lethargic and a little under the weather. Make sure you drink plenty of water and take it easy for a day or two after your session. To give your body enough time to flush out toxins that were brought to the surface during your treatment.
