What is causing the sharp pain on the left side of my back?

What is causing the sharp pain on the left side of my back?

Let's face it: most of the human population experience back pain, but lower left back pain may be the reason why you have to call out of work. According to statistics about 75-80% of people will suffer from low back pain in your lifetime. Sometimes the pain in the lower left side of your back can be most intense. If you are having pain on the left side of your back, it can be caused by several different factors. These sources include muscles, spinal joints, ligaments, nerves, tendons or any combination of the five.

What is Causing My Left Lower Back Pain?

1.) Sprain and/or strain in your back

Left lower back pain can be caused from a sprain and/or a strain in your back, which affects the ligaments, muscles, and tendons. This strain usually happens if you over stretch the muscle beyond its tensile force or improperly stretch.

Your symptoms may include a sharp stabbing sensation or a mild ache. Lumbar pain (or low back pain) may also be due to a fracture which can cause lower left back pain. The lumbar injury specifically affects the spine.

Our Jacksonville chiropractor performs a full evaluation to determine what it is that's causing that discomfort around the spine. Usually if you have a lumbar injury, it is a localized pain in the back but sometimes it may radiate around the waist region. The pain will become more intense with the more movements you make.

2.) Sciatica:

Sciatica is another commonly known condition to cause left lower back pain. This is when there is pressure on a nerve which will cause irritation. Sciatica is usually present if you have a ruptured or bulging disc.

If you do have sciatica, you should not sit for long periods of time, perform moderate to heavy lifting, exercising that creates compression through the spine such as running or squatting. Initially you must avoid straining this area. These activities can worsen the pain in your lower lumbar area.

3.) Prolapsed disc:

Prolapsed disc is when there is irritation to the rubber cushion. This cushion is located in between individual bones that make up the spine. Many times people will not experience symptoms from a prolapsed disc, which is why it's important to seek Jacksonville chiropractic care.
