What Can I Do for Achilles Tendonitis?

What Can I Do for Achilles Tendonitis?

Achilles tendonitis is a sports-related injury in which the Achilles tendon is overused. This tendon is the band of tissue that connects the calf muscles at the back of your lower leg to your heel bone. Achilles tendonitis is most common in runners.

Symptoms of Achilles tendonitis include:

- Increased pain with increased physical activity
- Swelling of the Achilles tendon
- Tender calf and heel
- Thickening of the Achilles tendon

What Causes Achilles Tendonitis?

Causes of Achilles tendonitis usually occurs when you do too much too soon, such as runners who have increased their mileage quickly. Other factors that can lead to Achilles tendinitis include tight muscles in the calf, hamstring, or gluteal regions.

It is also very common in people who do not stretch regularly or take the time to warm up before they exercise. Although Achilles tendonitis is known to be a long-term condition there are particular precautions and treatments you must take advantage of to prevent it from persisting any further.

Natural Treatment for Achilles Tendonitis

The most effective treatment method to reduce the pain is usually non-invasive and a more physical approach to help heal the muscles. A chiropractor or physical therapist will do a series of motion tests to check all of the muscles and joints in the area to see what needs to be adjusted. These adjustments will help restore normal motion to the joints of the foot and ankle which will also help to reduce all of the stress that has been placed on the tendon and lower leg.

The chiropractor or physical therapist will also provide you with certain treatments such as muscle stimulation, ultrasound therapy, gentle stretching and strengthening exercises, and heat/ice to help loosen the tendon and help decrease inflammation so that the treatment can progress.

If you combine chiropractic care with physical therapy and massage therapy to your recovery process it will improve rather quickly. Physical therapy will help to strengthen and increase flexibility to the muscles and tendons. Massage therapy will benefit by breaking up muscle adhesions/scar tissue, reduce swelling and improve circulation.

Just remember to stretch and warm-up before ANY exercise to prevent injury but also to ensure that you are being safe and healthy for the wellness of your body!
