Spinal Decompression

Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression (DTS) Therapy

What is non-surgical spinal decompression therapy?

Non-surgical spinal decompression is a passive therapy that utilizes a motorized device that gently stretches and relaxes the spinal discs. The goal is to achieve relieving neck pain with or without associated arm pain, or low back pain with or without associated leg pain. The gentle pulling creates a negative intra-discal pressure (lower pressure) within the spinal discs to allow an influx of healing nutrients, oxygen, and other substances into the disc, which helps relieve painful symptoms. This process which improves intervertebral disc function and health is called imbibition. The total treatment time is usually around 15-20 minutes per session.

Who are candidates for this type of treatment?

There are several different conditions or injuries that have a high success rate of resolving the pain with decompression treatment. The most common condition is a “slipped disc”. This term is often used to describe what is more specifically known as a disc bulge or herniation. This type of injury may cause a narrowing in the spinal canal where the spinal cord is contained. Also, the disc herniation may push into the intervertebral foramen where the nerve exits out of the spinal column to innervate with other body parts and organs. Another condition is called spinal stenosis. This is a narrowing of certain anatomical parts of the spine due to moderate to severe arthritis and degenerative changes with the spinal discs, vertebrae and posterior facet joints.

3 Phases of DTS Therapy

Phase I: Non-surgical spinal decompression treatment
Phase II: Stabilization of supporting structures by incorporating rehabilitation exercises to strengthen muscles that support the spine with continued spinal decompression treatment.
Phase III: Strength, stabilizers, and core rehabilitation exercises to help bring back full health of spine with continued spinal decompression treatment.
