Natural Pain Relief from Sciatica in Jacksonville

Sciatica can cause chronic pain which is sometimes severe and debilitating. At Integrative Healthcare Solutions (formerly Jacksonville Beach Chiropractic) we understand how frustrating it can be to live with a condition that decreases your quality of life. Chiropractic care can not only ease the pain of sciatica, but it can successfully treat the cause and eliminate sciatic pain without the use of drugs or surgery.

What are the symptoms of sciatica?

Sciatica itself is actually a symptom of a more serious problem. Commonly caused by a herniated or bulging disc, sciatica is discomfort that radiates down the sciatic nerve. Typically, sciatic pain is felt on only one side of the body, but some patients experience it on both sides. Sensations may include burning, tingling, or a feeling of electrical shock starting at the lower back and running down into the gluteus, the thighs or even all the way down to the feet.

As a symptom, sciatica can be treated, but it cannot be eliminated unless the source of pain is addressed.

What causes sciatica?

A herniated or slipped (bulging) disc is the most common cause of sciatic pain. The misalignment of the spine causes inflammation or pinching of the sciatic nerve, sending uncomfortable sensations down the length of the nerve.

Other causes include:

  • Piriformis Syndrome (tightening of the piriformis muscle), constricting the sciatic nerve
  • Narrowing of the spinal canal
  • Misalignment of the spine
  • Spondylolisthesis
  • Abnormality of the nervous system
  • Tumors

How is sciatica treated?

The only way to truly cure sciatica is to treat the cause; however, sciatic pain can be managed through a variety of techniques.

  • Over-the-counter or prescription anti-inflammatory and pain medications
  • Physical therapy
  • Rest
  • Ice packs/heat packs
  • Yoga
  • Acupuncture
  • Lifestyle changes

At Integrative Healthcare Solutions, we frequently treat patients who are suffering with sciatica pain. After a thorough examination to determine the cause of your sciatica, we will develop an individualized treatment plan which may include spinal adjustment, massage therapy and postural reeducation in addition to the techniques listed above.

I’ve never seen a chiropractic doctor before. How can spinal adjustments help sciatica?

Though they are an important part of chiropractic care, spinal adjustments are not the only technique our chiropractors use to help patients with sciatica or other painful conditions. For example, if your sciatica is caused by a herniated disc, chiropractic adjustments or spinal decompression therapy can gently return the disc to proper alignment, eliminating the constriction of the sciatic nerve and the pain. If the cause is Piriformis Syndrome, we might combine spinal adjustment techniques with massage therapy or Class IV Laser Therapy to release the muscle tightness at the root of your pain.

My sciatica pain comes and goes. Can I still benefit from chiropractic care?

It’s common for sciatica pain to appear intermittently. Temporary changes in activity or lifestyle can ease or worsen the pain. Sciatic pain rarely, if ever, disappears permanently without treatment. Our chiropractors can help you treat the underlying cause of sciatica and greatly reduce the risk of re-occurrence.
