Massage Therapy is one of the more relaxing and soothing types of treatments provided at our health care clinic. Massage in general is typically the pressing, rubbing and manipulating of your skin, muscles, tendons and ligaments. Massage may range from a light stroking to a deep pressure. There are many different types of massage, which include
- Swedish: Swedish massage is a gentle form of massage that uses long strokes, kneading, deep circular movements, vibration and tapping to help relax and energize you.
- Deep Tissue: Deep tissue massage is a massage technique using slower, more-forceful strokes to target the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue, commonly to help with muscle damage from injuries.
- Sports Massage: A sports massage is similar to a Swedish massage, but it's geared toward people involved in sport activities to help prevent or treat injuries.
- Trigger Point:Trigger point massage is a massage that focuses on areas of tight muscle fibers that can form in your muscles after injuries or overuse. While there are a variety of massage techniques, each massage therapy session provided is tailored to meet your unique pain condition or injury.

Another type of treatment provided by chiropractors is corrective exercises. Corrective exercises are movements or exercises chosen to correct a specific dysfunction. Corrective exercise is a chiropractic technique which is very different from other programs. It starts with a detailed analysis of the physical arrangement of the body and helps to determine any imbalances or deficits that could be affecting an individual's performance and any of his/her daily activities. After the analysis is completed, a very specific corrective exercise and flexibility program is developed to help correct the body's structure and bring it back to its normal state.
Corrective exercises are all about choosing the right exercises for your posture, activity level, and personal health history. Knowing when and how to progress corrective exercises and making sure they are performed with proper technique and posture is the goal.
In our everyday lives, we’re constantly doing activities that create imbalances in our bodies which include anything from sleeping on one side, sitting for long periods of time, or participating in sports like golf or tennis. Our bodies slowly develop strengths and weaknesses that eventually lead to asymmetry in our posture and movement. These posture and movement imbalances can lead to unnecessary wear and tear on our muscles and joints and make us more susceptible to chronic pain and injuries. And as a result of this, corrective exercises are designed to help make positive changes in the way an individual moves; they concentrate on the underlying cause.
Some of the benefits of corrective exercises include pain reduction, a decrease in pain medications, enhancement of functional and athletic performance, a decrease in further injuries from training and sports.
Corrective exercises also help in differentiating between movement quality and compensations, detecting the cause-and-effect relationship to micro-trauma, improves daily living activities, improves strength, flexibility, and posture, and reduces stress. The overall goal of corrective exercise is to identify both posture and movement imbalances and joint limitations and develop a program to correct them. The focus is on movements designed to create balance, stability, and/or mobility in areas that are not functioning properly.
Spinal Decompression is another form of treatment and therapy provided by our chiropractor’s office. Non-surgical spinal decompression is a passive therapy that utilizes a motorized device that gently and gradually stretches and relaxes the bodies spinal discs. Spinal decompression works by gently stretchingthe spine which changes the force and position of the spine. This in turn helps to take pressure off the bodies spinal disks (gel-like cushions between the bones in your spine) by creating negative pressure in the disc. As a result, bulging or herniated disks may retract, taking pressure off nerves and other structures in your spine. This type of treatment helps to promote movement of water, oxygen, and nutrient-rich fluids into the disks so they can heal. There are three separate phases involved in spinal decompression.
- Phase I: The first is phase I, a non-surgical spinal decompression treatment
- Phase II: Phase two is the stabilization of supporting structures by incorporating rehabilitation exercises to strengthen muscles that support the spine with continued spinal decompression treatment.
- Phase III: The last of the three is phase III, which is to strengthen, stabilize, and use core rehabilitation exercises to help bring back full health of the spine.
Doctors have used nonsurgical spinal decompression in an attempt to treat back/neck pain or sciatica (pain, weakness, or tingling that extends down the leg), bulging or herniated disks or degenerative disk disease, worn spinal joints, and/or injured and diseased spinal nerve roots.
Spinal decompression is a type of traction therapy applied to the spine in an attempt to bring about several benefits including a negative intra-discal pressure to promote retraction or repositioning of the herniated or bulging disc material and a lower pressure in the disc that will cause an influx of healing nutrients and other substances into the disc. The overall goal is to achieve alleviated neck pain with or without associated arm pain, or low back pain with or without associated leg pain.
Interferential Electrostimulation Therapy
Interferential Electrostimulation Therapy is a passive, non-invasive therapeutic treatment that aids in the relief of inflammatory pain, the reduction of muscle spasms, and helps boost the acceleration of soft tissue healing.
Interferential therapy is very useful in the treatment of circulatory and muscular disorders, stiffness of joints, edema, and inflammation. Two channels of electrical stimulation create a third current that penetrates the affected tissues with little resistance which helps control pain and muscle contractions. Small amounts of electrical currents are delivered to electrode patches while a combination of low and high frequency impulses travel into the tissues below the skin. When applied to tissue, electric currents create thermal, physiologic, and chemical responses. This helps to stimulate the body’s natural responses to secrete endorphins and activates natural pain killers (opioid receptors in the spinal cord, brain stem, and peripheral nervous system).
Patients will typically feel a slight “tingling” sensation during the Interferential Electrostimulation therapy. Interferential electrostimulation treatment can also be utilized for fast-acting pain relief for patients with painful symptoms. Ligament sprains, muscle strains, and spasms respond very well to this treatment as it aids in reducing muscle atrophy and helps increase blood circulation.
Other uses of this type of treatment include muscle strengthening, endurance, and spasticity management. Electrostimulation therapy also helps reduce pain safely, decreases swelling and inflammation, restores lost movement and improves restricted movements and coordination, stimulates the natural hormones which can help your body heal faster, and is considered by many experts as a highly effective form of treatment for chronic pain. Therapeutic ultrasound is a passive treatment that admits high-frequency sound waves to the skins surface for deep penetration into injured soft tissue. The waves can vibrate as fast as one million times per second, which in turn creates a heat response that is absorbed by the body’s ligaments, tendons, fascia, and scar tissue. As the ultrasound waves pass from the treatment head into the skin they cause the surrounding tissues to vibrate; particularly, tissues that contain collagen. The vibrations help with breaking down unhealthy calcium and hard tissue deposits. The increased vibration leads to the production of heat within the tissue as well.
This increase in temperature may cause an increase in the extensibility of structures such as ligaments, tendons, scar tissue and fibrous joint capsules. In addition, heating may also help to reduce pain, muscle spasms, and promote a healthy healing process. Ultrasound can produce many other effects than just the potential heating effect, it has been shown to cause increases in tissue relaxation, local blood flow, and scar tissue breakdown.
The effect of the increase in local blood flow can be used to help reduce local swelling and chronic inflammation, and even promote bone fracture healing! Other conditions treated by therapeutic ultrasound therapy include tendonitis and non-acute joint swelling. One of the greatest proposed benefits of ultrasound therapy is that it can help reduce the healing time of certain soft tissue injuries. Ultrasound is thought to accelerate the normal resolution time of the inflammatory process by attracting more mast cells to the site of injury.
Intersegmental Spinal Traction
Amongst other types of treatments,Intersegmental Spinal Traction is a non-invasive therapy which induces passive mobilization into vertebral spinal joints and discs. It gently stretches out the spinal ligaments and discs to increase mobility and improve circulation of spinal fluids. This treatment helps gently re-establish the normal ranges of the body's spine. By re-establishing the normal range of motion of the spine in a very gentle and effective manner, it also aids in reducing the muscle spasms thus providing relaxation to the muscles.
