The Backpack: Four Key Must-Haves

The priority in purchasing a backpack is to select function over fashion. This request may be easier said than done. But…wearing a backpack in the ‘fashionable’ way can only lead to improper spinal alignment, poor posture, and eventually pain. Ouch!

What to look for in a backpack:

  1. Go for as small a backpack as you can, because the student will likely overpack it. For students 12 years and under, any more than 10 percent of their body weight (so if they’re 100 pounds, that’s 10 pounds) is going to break down the posture and affect the gait.

  1. Straps should be wide (at least three finger widths) and S-shaped, meaning it curves out away from the neck and then back along the chest in this comfortable S-shape. If it goes straight up and down, it can be very uncomfortable.

  1. Find a backpack that helps you intuitively pack, so the heavier items should be closest to the body. For instance, the laptop sleeve should be right on the back of the bag, against the back. Lighter items should go in smaller compartments on the exterior.

  1. Fashion vs Function; choose function. There are certainly backpacks that look great and feel great, so don’t create musculoskeletal problems by choosing a stylish but uncomfortable day pack. An individual will grow and change, so don’t be wedded to a backpack or, worse, buy a huge backpack to grow into.

Backpack Safety

The heaviest item in the backpack should rest against the back, which means loading them first and attempting to distribute the weight evenly. While you or your child may think nothing of carrying a backpack slung over one shoulder, the truth is that this fashion statement is damaging to the developing spine. When carrying a pack on one side only, one shoulder is required to carry a burden that both shoulders and the back should be sharing equally. The only proper way to carry a backpack is with both straps over the shoulders and the backpack resting against the lower back.
